SafeWork NSW has intensified its efforts to improve safety standards across regional farms by conducting a series of proactive inspections.
Recognising agriculture as one of Australia's most hazardous industries, these inspections aim to address the high incidence of fatalities and serious injuries associated with farm work.

In 2024, the agriculture sector reported 12 workplace fatalities, prompting SafeWork NSW to take decisive action. Since becoming a standalone regulator in July 2025, the agency has carried out 25 compliance inspections focusing on critical areas such as mobile plant operations, fixed machinery, and vehicle safety.

These inspections are part of SafeWork NSW's 2025-2026 regulatory priorities, which emphasise the need for stringent safety measures in the operation of heavy machinery like tractors, quad bikes, and side-by-side vehicles. By identifying and mitigating risks associated with these machines, the initiative seeks to prevent accidents and promote a culture of safety within the farming community.

Farmers are encouraged to collaborate with SafeWork NSW by adhering to safety guidelines and participating in training programs. Implementing proper maintenance routines, providing adequate operator training, and ensuring the use of appropriate protective equipment are essential steps toward reducing workplace hazards.

Through these proactive measures, SafeWork NSW aims to foster a safer working environment on farms, ultimately protecting the lives and well-being of agricultural workers across New South Wales.
